Rio Dulce, Guatemala
About  800 miles SSW of Key West
Just south of Belize
The Maya still live here,
Back
Fronteras, my home town
Volcan San Pedro, Lake Atitlan
The countryside is quite mountainous,
even in the lowlands.
There are small villages like these
throughout the countryside.
They still hold to their customs, and speak their native dialects.
My amiga, Maria, and some of her
Mayan craftwork.
My neighbors in Bacadilla, Anna, Cristi. & Olga
in their
cayuca, a dugout canoe
Agua caliente – a hot waterfall falling
into a cold pool.
The women carry their bundles on
their heads
The men carry theirs on their backs,
with a head strap
This brand new, freshly carved cayuca
could be had for about $100
If they get a rowboat, they paddle it, backwards
For a while I stayed on the 102 foot schooner Encounter, then Bacadilla, Barrio Cementario, and, lately, Cuchilla.
